Newsreel 63 – The Train of Shadows

Newsreel 63 tries to position and understand a particular image – a shred of video taken with a mobile phone on the once famous Belgrade - Ljubljana rail-line, where refugees now travel not in couchettes but between the train’s wheels.

Newsreel 63 drifts into a visual investigation of railways and explores its historical, social, and political narrative.

Geopolitical context

There are several routes for refugees from conflict zones such as Syria, Afghanistan, and Eritrea to reach Western Europe. A primary path is via Turkey, Greece, and onwards through the countries of the Balkan Peninsula. Since 2018, the borders between Hungary/Serbia and Hungary/Croatia have been practically closed to asylum seekers. As a consequence, getting to Western Europe has become complicated. Now migrants must follow a more dangerous route, on foot, through the mountain forests of Bosnia and Croatia towards Slovenia. Or migrants hide in cargo trains heading from Serbia to the West. Both routes are extremely dangerous. As a result of the anti-migration policies of Hungary as well as other EU countries, many migrants who considered Serbia and other Balkan countries as transit ones have had to seek refuge there. Grassroots organizations in Belgrade actively helped refugees, but the government put pressure on them by creating bureaucratic difficulties for NGOs working with migrants, as one example. The situation with refugees from Asian and African countries in the Balkan region remains very difficult. According to official sources, in September 2022 over 19,000 attempts to cross the Serbian-Croatian border, where the police often use unjustified violence against refugees, were documented.

Director
Nika Autor undertook her BA and MA studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana and obtained her PhD in Practice at Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Her practice is primarily based on experimental videos and documentary films, film essays, photography, collages, drawings, and spatial video installations. The focus of her work is research into invisibilities/inaudibilities in relation to concealed topics of the forgotten past and the silenced present.

She is part of Newsreel Front (Obzorniška Fronta), an informal collective of workers hailing from film theory and art practice fields.
