The Landscape of Fear
The film is a first-hand attempt to grapple with the experience of events on the Polish-Belarusian border during a humanitarian crisis that has become part of an escalating conflict of major geopolitical forces, clashing in the struggle for dominance on the newly drawn world map, where the lines of national borders also mark the limits of safety.
Geopolitical context
Following the falsified elections and mass protests in Belarus (2021), and amidst the deterioration of international relations, Alexander Lukashenko simplified the process of obtaining visas for migrants from Kurdistan, as well as Middle Eastern, African and Asian countries. Lukashenko also increased the number of incoming flights from these regions and offered an unobstructed way to find asylum in the EU. Tens of thousands of migrants who arrived in Belarus in hopes of onward travel to a safe country remain trapped between the borders of Belarus and other European Union countries. Big human rights organizations ignored the situation, but at the same time grassroot activist groups have helped migrants document the numerous violations of human rights and asylum procedures (especially on the Polish-Belarusian border). EU border guards and military use violence against migrants in an attempt to push them away from the border, while on the other side they experience the same from Belarusian border officials and in some cases brutal pushbacks to the border of the EU. Large groups of people are forced to constantly move along the border without food and water, under harsh weather conditions, in search of a safe crossing point. This causes physical and psychological deterioration, and sometimes leads to loss of life. In 2022, the Polish authorities began construction of a five-meter-high wall on the border with Belarus, making it much more difficult to get across. According to activist groups, people are often seriously injured in such attempts. The situation is worsened by constant pressure on the public organizations and activist groups providing humanitarian and legal assistance to asylum seekers.
